Peer-to-peer web search: Invitation to beta test and discussion

Hi Tim,

> you are talking about democratizing the web search dictatorship.
> I think thats a pretty neat idea. But a few question come into my mind:
dictatorship wasn't exactly the term I was using ;-)

> Why there is a company behind this (with a 25k € deposit called gmbh)?
To be ready to grow, as it's an illusion to start a real competition as a "lone warrior" and to minimize risks against the omnipresent legal threads.

> Why you dont publish your product open source and let everyone participate?
Well, we let everybody participate in our revenues! For most of the users this kind of participation is probably more interesting than having access to source code.

The source code is not public for two reasons:

First: OpenSource is perfect when competing by a cost advantage with a commercial product on the same technological level (Linux, OpenOffice).
But it's not an good idea to hand over your technological advantage to a monopoly, when competing with its free service with enormous brand power.

Second: I don't believe in big teams if you are aiming radical changes: http://www.acmqueue.com/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=143

> Why the test isn't public? Do you fear some other WEB2.0 kid comes along and steals your idea? LOOL
On our homepage there is a detailed description of our idea. We also discussed it openly in the P2P debate between FAROO and Jeremie Miller of Wikia:
http://altsearchengines.com/2007/10/02/great-debate-peer-to-peer-p2p-search-part-i/
http://altsearchengines.com/2007/10/09/peer-to-peer-p2p-search-debate-part-ii/

The test is not public yet for two reasons:
First, in the beginning we wanted a controlled growth of the network, to test and improve our p2p-technology.
Second, while we are concentrating on testing the technology, the index size is not sufficient yet for the average searcher.

We will do an initial crawling first, to provide a good search experience from the beginning

> FYI obfuscating .NET code is like obfuscating php, javasript or html :)
Congratulations, then you got your hands on our "open source" already;-)

> Ever heard about http://yacy.net/ or Sciencenet before? :)
Of course, I even tried it ;-) There is lot room for improvements though.
Have a look at altsearchengines.com. More than thousand start-ups are active within the search space.
Thousand chances to improve the search, both in quality and business model.

> Honestly, I think you just want to get money out of this.
Well, I think everybody needs some money for living, as long there is no open source housing and food ;-)
Isn't it better to make a living from an idea you believe in, than to work in a boring job and dream in your spare time only?
I'm raising three kids, from what? I can't see anything wrong in earning money, honestly!

By the way, we are sharing our revenues with our users up to 50% percent: http://www.faroo.com/english/technology/participation.html
Does this the search engine you are using everyday?

> Democratizing the web by using closed source products is like using voting machines to enhance democrazy.
We are democratizing search, because in our user centred ranking every user get a vote for ranking, while previously only webmasters decided about the page rank.
This is not a matter of open or closed source.

> Make your project open source and license it under GPL or BSD
> and you WILL get a lot of attention, if your project is worth it.
As mentioned, there are a lot of Open and Closed Source solution already.
I believe what really matters is, who first succeeds in a search with competitive quality and speed AND democratic ranking and fair-minded business model.

>Yours sincerely
>tim bicycle

We are all trained to look out for potential traps, but sometimes there are also chances along our way ;-)

Best regards,
Gosia
